Coming face to face with a 500lb beast!

Whilst walking the Juan de Fuca trail (West Coast of Vancouver Island) yesterday, we were challenged by a huge Black Bear. Standing a little over 6ft high in the forest pathway, the bear was no more than 30ft in front of us. Having wanted to see a bear (from a distance!) since Yosemite, excitement took over and we struggled to remember our Bear Safety Guidelines. Instead, I fumbled for the camera, whilst trying to remember if we were meant to fight or run. Sadly the bear wasn't up for posing, and retreated before I could get a shot in. An idea of what it looked like is below:
